Extra Curricular Activities

The Happy Home and School for the Blind holds an annual exhibition in December. Sponsored annually by HSBC, the school sells handiwork produced by the children ranging from magnificent mosaics to flower vases to cleaning cloths, household items and greeting cards. The exhibitions are extremely popular with a large number of visitors and receive excellent press reviews.

Boys in the pottery department craft elegant vases and serving dishes which are magnificently moulded and finished within the school itself.

To improve their sense of touch and feel, students of HHSB are encouraged to partake in several extra-curricular activities ranging from pottery to mosaic, carpentry to weaving. This also exposes them to vocational training which is of great benefit to them once they leave the school.

Partially-sighted boys are taught how to work in mosaic by specialist volunteers. Beautiful items, some with intricate designs, are crafted by these children and greatly appreciated. The children learn to use their sense of touch to aid their work. Beautiful mosaics are displayed around the school including the mosaic carpet in the auditorium, as well as smaller mosaic trays and stands.

Carpentry is another activity which is encouraged. Boys involved in carpentry at the Happy Home tend to form a partnership with the mosaic department producing small tables, stands and trays for the mosaics. In this way the two departments complement each other and add further beauty to the finished product.

The weaving section of the school turns out a large number of items for dusting, cleaning and washing, and through extensive use of handlooms produces these ever-useful items for use within the school and for sale. The children also make cloth bags which are environmentally friendly and much in demand. These items are very popular and are quickly sold out at the exhibition.

Card making is a new initiative at the school, and the children at the Happy Home design the cards using photographs of mosaics and other images.
