Sanjay's Story

In 2004, Sanjay found his way to HHSB by accident. His mother had gone to the telephone booth at the hospital to make a call where she met Dastagir, an ex-student of the school who owned the telephone booth. Dastagir advised her to take Sanjay to HHSB where he himself had studied. Sanjay has so far undergone 37 sessions of chemotherapy, but remains totally blind.

Sanjay was born with normal vision and attended regular school until the age of seven when he was in Std. II. One day, he suddenly found that he had lost vision in his left eye while writing his exam.

He later started suffering from severe headaches and bleeding from the nose for which he was referred to the Thane Civil Hospital. There, a CT scan revealed that he was suffering from cancer of the paranasal sinuses. Gradually, Sanjay lost vision in his right eye as well and was treated with radiation to shrink a large tumour, and chemotherapy thereafter.

Although he has completely lost his vision, he excels in studies, participates in music, mime, drama, yoga and swimming. He is extremely bright and makes very interesting conversation. He is healthy & happy and strongly believes that he has started a new life at HHSB. He continues to be extremely positive with no sense of bitterness or self-pity – a truly brave role-model for many of us. He aspires to become an actor one day, and has already featured in the film “Seven”.
